Vertex 3 (VTX3-25SAT3-120G) is the latest generation of solid state drives by OCZ Technology, a California-based company famous for its innovative solutions for computer enthusiasts. With the support for the latest 6Gbps SATA3 interface, Vertex 3 family is supposed to be one of the fastest solid state drives on the market today. Having owned a 120GB Vertex 2 SSD for more than a year, I was really excited to see the new generation come out. Let’s see if OCZ Vertex 3 120 GB drive is really the best out there as so many reviewers say? Read our full OCZ Vertex 3 review.
Support for 6Gbps SATA3 Interface
This is one of the biggest selling points of this drive. The previous generation (Vertex 2) drives used slower SATA 3Gbps interface, so if your system has a 6Gbps controller (or if you’re planning on upgrading soon), Vertex 3 is the way to go. If you still have an older 3Gbps interface don’t worry – Vertex 3 is fully backwards compatible.
The latest SandForce controller and 25mm NAND make Vertex 3 almost double the speed of Vertex 2
This one definitely helped me make up my mind. Don’t get me wrong – Vertex 2 was already blazingly fast. But if the new generation can almost double the speed – I want it! Especially seeing that the price for 120GB Vertex 3 is less than what I paid for Vertex 2 last year.

ne thing I really loved about Vertex 3 is the price point that OCZ decided to release it at. You get unparalleled performance at a price of an older-generation solid-state drive. If you want to get the best of the best in terms of your system performance – Vertex 3 120 GB can provide it without breaking the bank, which makes it, in my opinion, one of the best 120 GB SSD drive out there right now.
OCZ Vertex 3 120GB comes in two edition – Vertex 3 120GB Standard (VTX3-25SAT3-120G) and Vertex 3 120GB MAX IOPS edition (which is probably the fastest SSD on the market today). While this second edition boasts higher IOPS, in my opinion it’s totally excessive for a regular user and most probably you won’t notice the difference at all. I would say – go with a regular Vertex 3 and save your cash.
At the time of writing Vertex 3 already has about 50 reviews on Amazon. As always, people recommend you install it as your boot drive. Installing your OS and your apps on this SSD drive will give you near-instantaneous boot up time (many say their Windows 7 boot time was cut in half after the upgrade), your apps will launch in seconds (even bigger ones, like CAD or Photoshop) and some even noticed their browsing experience get even faster.
Many users have pointed out that Vertex 3 120 GB is an ideal candidate for a MacBook Pro or any other laptop upgrade – significantly faster than the stock SSDs that come preinstalled with the laptops. The drive’s 2.5-inch form factor fits most laptops easily.
Some reviewers mentioned minor issues with the early firmware versions though it looks like these have been ironed out in the latest updates. Vertex 3 is the newest addition to OCZ’s SSD family and OCZ are known to fix any issues in their products as soon as possible. They say they want their customers to be 100% satisfied with the purchase, and they are known to actually stand behind their words.
One more thing – when writing this OCZ Vertex 3 review I came along a lot of people saying that OCZ is crap and advising everyone to stay away from OCZs products, while at the same time even more people call it the best SSD of 2011. Well, for me it means that’s a good product as every good product always has it’s haters and followers. Mediocre products don’t get any attention. I personally think OCZ are one of the most innovative companies out there and they really push the limits when it comes to performance. Surely, SSDs as a new technology are not 100% perfect yet and some of them do break. However, I have used two OCZ drives over the last couple of years and I’ve never had a single issue with them. The speed is incredible, the OS boots in seconds – what more could you ask for? Yes, OCZ Vertex 3 is not the cheapest out there nor is it the most reliable (at least on paper), but I would’t bash the product. If you really care about the performance – Vertex 3 (VTX3-25SAT3-120G) is the best choice for you.
Overall, OCZ Vertex 3 120 GB (VTX3-25SAT3-120G) is an ideal SSD drive for anyone looking for a state-of-the-art boot drive that will take your computing experience to the next level. It’s not the cheapest solid state drive out there, but if you want the best of the best – that’s the drive for you. And thanks to OCZ for not charging us a fortune for it!
